I have been a mobile journalist for over 6 years now. Hence, I have seen the mobile gaming markets closely. I am aware of the mistakes some popular games made, and as a result, they are no longer relevant. Meanwhile, I have also seen games that have been relevant for almost a decade now without fundamentally changing the game mechanics.
That being said, I would like to take two games to take lessons from: PUBG Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile. Since PUBG Mobile is one of the most successful games in the mobile market, Delta Force can take a lot of inspiration. Meanwhile, Apex Legends Mobile, though it is one of my personal favorites, is classified as a failure and is no longer active. Hence Delta Force Mobile can learn from the mistakes Apex Legends Mobile made.
What should Delta Force learn from PUBG Mobile’s success?
1. Loads and loads of collaborations
One thing that PUBG Mobile never misses out on is collaborations. The game has paired up with all the pop-culture hits ranging from popular car brands to movies to sports. For example, the game has collaborated with Lamborghini by offering in-game skins inspired by the brand. Meanwhile, the game also collaborated with country-specific trends.
Why it matters?
By collaborating, developers aim to essentially engage players. Seeing their favorite brand in the game can spike their interest in in-game goodies. Additionally, this is a great way to do PR marketing. I can it’s a win-win situation for both the developer and the players.
2. Plenty of events coming every other day
Unlike Fortnite, PUBG Mobile does not have an evolving map. The main map In PUBG, Erangle, has been the same as it was when it launched. However, the developer keeps on bringing new events that spice up the gameplay. For example, a current event spawns random flying islands on the map where there is plenty of loot. This drives players to play much more aggressively since there is also a respawn option. Though this is a limited-time event, it allows players to engage with the game so they are not bored out of repetitive gameplay.
3. Treating all markets importantly
Online games work via a server. The closer you are to a server, the better ping you get for better gameplay. At the start, I remember having connectivity issues while residing in Estonia. I wrote an email about it and within a few months, my ping was stable. The game does not just take European markets seriously but also. Asian ones. When it faced issues in India, the developer rebranded its game to BGMI to cater to players of the country. This shows that PUBG Mobile takes every market seriously.
What should Delta Force learn from Apex Legends’ failure?
1. Lack of optimization
Backing up the Apex Legends platform is EA, a reputable name in the gaming industry. Despite the strong backing, the game was not fully optimized before hitting the mobile market. In fact, I tested the game on a flagship phone and got no high frame-rate options. Players with lower-tier devices complained of lag and connectivity issues. This resulted in an overall bad impact and many players left the game minutes after installing it due to bad performance.
Why it matters?
Being an online game, Delta Force cannot take connectivity and server performance for granted. Additionally, there is a big market for mobile gamers with affordable phones. Hence, if they want to cater the game to all, it should be fully optimized ahead of the launch.
2. Not listening to the community
EA has faced a lot of backlash for not listening to the community for their PC counterpart of Apex Legends. However, it also happened during the mobile version launch. Instead of listening to the issues faced by players like cheater issues, bugs, glitches, etc. – the developer kept launching new irrelevant stuff.
A more concrete example would be Farlight 84. It is also a battle royale game that failed miserably after a very successful launch. The reason? The developer did not listen to the community and changed the game according to their liking instead of what players wanted. They kept changing the game’s looks, and character design and brought big changes to the game’s roots. This frustrated the gamers and the game went from the most liked Play Store game of the year to probably the worst one.
3. Lack of modes
When you dive into an online game, especially like Battle Royale, it can get repetitive over time. Although Delta Force is not a battle royale title, it is quite close in comparison. Apex Legends Mobile did not have many modes apart from its standard battle royale mode. This made the gameplay a little repetitive resulting in a lack of interest over time. Hence, Delta Force should bring various modes apart from its classic operations mode to give plenty of options for gamers. For example, there could be a TDM mode (team deathmatch) or a custom mode where players can compete with each other.
4. Lack of tournaments
Games like PUBG Mobile, Apex Legends Mobile, and Delta Force have one thing in common: competitive gameplay. However, it is up to a developer on how well they can execute this element of the game.
Is the developer conducting local and international tournaments? Is e-sports a focus for the developer? Are streamers being sponsored?
These all things matter in these types of competitive games. Unfortunately, Apex Legends Mobile lacked them and did not have a clear path on how they could execute such plans.
This was a comprehensive article on what mistakes should Delta Force avoid and what it could learn from the top in the industry. Hopefully, the game belongs to a successful group of games. Though, I have hoped since the mobile version of Delta Force is backed by Garena Games which is the developer behind Free Fire, another successful game in the market.
